Safaricom Marathon receives USD 130,000 boost from Huawei

Nairobi, 22nd June 2017… Huawei Technologies has renewed its commitment to sponsoring the Safaricom Marathon by giving a cheque of USD 130,000 (approximately Kshs 13 Million) in support of this year’s event scheduled to take place this Saturday at the Lewa conservancy.

For the past 10 years, Huawei has invested over 900,000 USD to the marathon, becoming one of the top corporate sponsors and contributing significantly to efforts to conserve wildlife, reduce human/wildlife conflict and provide clean water and education to communities in and around Lewa Conservancy.

This kind of support has seen the success of the marathon which has grown in scale to transform thousands of lives and communities around the Lewa conservancy,” said Bob Collymore, CEO Safaricom

The marathon which is in its 18th year will see about 1400 runners from 30 different countries around the world participate in the half and full marathons. The event will be held at Lewa conservancy in partnership with Safaricom Limited and Tusk Trust

Last year, the marathon raised over Kshs 62Million, bringing the total amount raised over the years to over Kshs 500 Million. The funds raised so far have been used to support community projects and facilitate wildlife conservation efforts.

As is the tradition, the Marathon will have three categories of runners which include; 5 km children’s fun race of between 10 to 14 years and 15 to 17 year olds, the 21 KM half marathon which will include team races and the 42 KM full marathon.
