Tuskys makes a stab at premium market with Muthaiga expansion plans

5/11…Retailer Tusker Mattresses has announced plans to enhance its footprint on the premium market segment.

As part of the plans, the retailer with a branch complement of 62 stores in Kenya (55) and Uganda (7), has sealed an agreement to expand and upgrade its Tuskys Thigiri Chap Chap Convenience store to a fully-fledged supermarket.

According to Tusker Mattresses CEO Dan Githua, the firm has signed a new lease at the New Muthaiga Mall, to develop a premium market focused supermarket.

Targeting an upmarket clientele, the new store to be relaunched before the end of this month will feature an expanded selection of imported and local premium Fast Moving Consumer Good (FMCG) products.

The store is currently undergoing renovation and upgrade works to install energy efficient lighting systems, island freezers, chillers and shelves consistent with the market segment. Upgrade works on the store’s fresh vegetables, bakery and butchery sections have already been completed.

“At Tuskys, we are actively rolling out a strategy to deepen our market presence across the delivery segments,” Githua said, adding that, “such enhancements will see us rolling out the premium focused Tuskys Thigiri Supermarket with an expanded range of products.”

Targeting the upmarket clientele around Muthaiga, Nyari, Kitisuru , Kyuna Spring Valley and Rosslyn Estate among others, the Tuskys Thigiri Supermarket will feature  a wide variety of exotic imported chocolates, frozen foods, an alcohol free wine cellar, sauces and food condiments, cheese, cosmetics, lotions and shampoos and pet food among other products and services.

The existing Tuskys Thigiri Chap Chap Convenience store was first opened in October 2011 and has successfully managed to curve a nice in the upmarket segment necessitating the current expansion programme.

Tuskys ongoing corporate transformation efforts recently received a global commendation at the prestigious 4th World Branding Awards recently held at the Kensington Palace in London last month.

In a rare commendation for a local brand, Tuskys with a branch complement of 62 outlets in Kenya (55) and Uganda (7) won the Kenya Supermarket Brand of the Year category. The World Branding Awards is the premier awards of the World Branding Forum for corporates drawn from the Commonwealth and beyond.

The global win also completes an awards hat trick for Tuskys which has also been adjudged an East Africa Superbrand Top 20 and Samsung Africa’s most valued distributor in East Africa award winner.
