USA footwear manufacturer Skechers has commenced an ambitious plan to claim a share of the lucrative East African market with the launch of two ultra-modern stores in Kenya.
The company says the two stores, located at Sarit Centre and Village market malls, are integral to the global footwear manufacturer’s plan to expand its retail, sales and logistic infrastructure to meet the global market’s growing demand. A similar investment is lined up for Uganda before close of the year.
Last year, Skechers crossed the 3,000-retail-store milestone following the opening of a superstore in Shenyang, China the company’s largest in the world. The brand is present in more than 170 countries through an extensive network of company-owned stores, distributors and joint ventures.
The Kenya franchise is operated by Phirdos Kenya Ltd, the sole distributor of Skechers and Clarks footwear in the country. “Skechers is a brand for the world. The stores that we are opening in Kenya join a network of superstores across the globe designed to showcase the brand’s diverse footwear styles and a growing line of apparel and accessories. The Sarit Centre and Village Market stores are a customer experience showcasing an unparalleled product offering outside of the Company’s e-commerce solutions and designed with the latest point-of-sale technologies,” said Mr. Fat-hi Basheikh, Phirdos Kenya Country Manager.
Speaking during the official opening of the stores, Mr. Basheikh disclosed that Phirdos Kenya will invest more than Kshs 500 million in the next two years in setting up more stores in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret as Skechers angles for the country’s growing lifestyle and performance footwear market segment.
“We are seeing many opportunities to grow our retail stores coverage in East Africa and particularly Kenya. We have been trading in the UK, US, Europe and Middle East for over a decade but with a muted presence in Kenya over the last two years. We are now ready to service this market in a big way. We are putting up a state of the art training facility at our regional headquarters in Nairobi to ensure that our staff are trained to international standards,” Mr. Basheikh noted.
Currently ranked the third largest athletic-footwear maker in the U.S, Skechers designs, develops and markets a diverse range of lifestyle footwear as well as performance footwear. Its product range comprises of 3,000 styles for men, women and children.
