Death toll from West Pokot landslide rises to six

The death toll from the mudslide that occurred at the border of West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties has risen to 6 after the body of a policeman who was missing was recovered.

On Sunday, one more person who was undergoing treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital died even as one person was evacuated to the hospital for treatment.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya said the search and rescue operation was underway adding that a total of 26 people were still missing.
“We will move those who are still prone to the disaster to safer grounds,” he said.

On Sunday, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the Interior Ministry to coordinate the search and rescue following the incident.
