Senate now questions sacking of top KEMRI scientist

The Senate is now seeking answers over the sacking of a top Director at the Centre for Virus Research at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).

Senate Deputy Speaker Cleophas Malala in a letter to Health Committee questioned the sacking of Dr. Joel Lutomia which he argues contravenes the provisions of the employment act.

Senator Malala questioned the motive of the sacking and how it impacts the performance of the research institute especially in the fight against the coronavirus.

He also asked the committee to reveal the amount of funding KEMRI has received from the government to support its research functions.

“State how much funding KEMRI has received from the Ministry of Health to help in testing and research on COVID-19 and purchasing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the KEMRI workers.”
