Former Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa dies at age 81

Former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa has died at age 81.

Mkapa who served as Tanzania’s head of state from 1995 – 2005 died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Dar-es-Salaam on Friday morning according to a statement from the country’s President John Pombe Magufuli.

The late president led several regional peace mediation efforts in office and afterwards.

“Magufuli asks all Tanzanians to remain calm, patient, and united during this difficult time,” a statement from his office said.
