Peris Jepchirchir wins women’s marathon gold

Kenya’s Peris Jepchirchir won the women’s marathon at Tokyo Olympic Games after finishing first in 2:27.20 ahead of fellow Kenyan world record holder Brigid Kosgey who finished second 2:27.36.

USA’s Molly Seidel finished third 2:27.46.The race tested athletes endurance with the sweltering heat in Saporo winnowing the field, leading to dropping out of a number of runners among them Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich, Ethiopian Zeineba Yimer, and Israel’s Lonah Chemtai Salpeter

Two-time world half marathon champion Jepchirchir pulled away  from Brigid Kosgei at the 40km mark  enroute to her  2:27:20finish. America’s Molly Siedel held on to take bronze.
