Proponents of the Proposed Constitution on Saturday took their campaigns to Embakasi constituency in Nairobi to woo the constituents to support the draft set to be voted for or against in the August Referendum.
Led by President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, leaders present at the event promised Kenyans a new constitution this time around that has unsuccessfully been persued for the last two decades.
Kibaki urged the crowd to vote in favour of the Proposed Constitution come the 4th of August. “Mimi naomba sisi wote tupitishe hii Katiba kwa maana tumengoja kwa Zaidi ya miaka 20”
The YES supporters who had braved the scorching sun at the Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi were urged to shun away from leaders who are spreading malicious lies about the the Proposed Constitution.
Kibaki termed the NO Team as bunches of anti-reformists who were out to derail the reform process in the country.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga was quick to defend the Government over reports that it was using taxpayer’s money to fund YES campaigns.
“Bunge haiwezi pitisha katiba halafu watu wa NO waanze kusema wanataka fedha za kufanyia campaign, huo ni unafiki” said the Premier, amid chants from crowd saying “Ndio baba”.
Kenyans were however urged to read the Proposed Constitution in order to make informed decisions during the Referendum and to overcome misinformation that is being perpetuated by a section of the leaders.
Raila maintained that anything passed in Parliament remains a government project terming those opposed to the draft as mischievious.
Vice president Kalonzo Musyoka, who jetted into the country from Sudan didn’t attend the rally after he was booed last week at Uhuru Park during a similar event.
Addressing the press at the Wilson Airport on arrival from Juba, Sudan, where he represented President Kibaki during the inauguration ceremony of Southern Sudan elect President Salva Kiir, the VP said ODM-Kenya was still consulting concerning joint YES rallies.
He however called for tolerance and dialogue in the search for a new constitution.
