Kass International - Washington (US)

The programmes run from Washington, DC

The programmes run from Washington, DC

The DC-based broadcasting station is the hub of much of the activity of Kenyans in the diaspora, the Kalenjiin people among them. The main programmes run from Washington, DC are as follows:

1) Kass Kwaneet, Kwaneet aap Kotisap, goes on air every Sunday morning in Kenya/Saturday late-night in Washington. The kwaneet is a group of ten or so well-educated individuals who are selflessly committed to improving the social, political, and economic uplifting of the community. Kwaneet is an old Kalenjiin word meaning a single military file during parade or on the march to war. Nowadays it refers to any group of like-minded, roughly same-age and same-sex individuals. Kemiin kwaneet also means "to queue up," because queuing up conjures memories of the ancient Kalenjiin armies that marched in files of four. Kwaneet projects and aspiirations are to be read at length on their website: http://kwaneet.org

2) Kass FM, DC, is also closely connected and associated with Gotabgaa, the organisation that brings together Kalenjiin diaspora. Gotabgaa organises major annual meets at chosen US cities and Kass FM publicises the events and finally airs live all the major highlights of those events, on the internet and on radio in Kenya. This has helped turn Gotabgaa into a major diaspora movement and the annual meeting something to look forward to. During the meeting, which is like a festival of sorts, all the ears, eyes, minds, and souls of the entire community are focused on the one summit and the venue temporarily represents the spiritual apex of the entire community globally. This year's meeting is scheduled for the DC area and the relevant website is: http://www.gotabgaadc.org/

3) Yes We Can is a programme run by Alex Tum, assisted by Director Yano Singei. Alex is a serious reader, a social and political commentator and combines extremely well with Director Yano, a comedian, to air one of the most entertaining-yet-serious programmes aired by Kass FM International as a whole: political satire. This programme goes on air Saturday early morning, East African Time, or Friday late night Washington, DC time, biweekly. Yes we can is on Facebook: yeswecan-pamojatunaweza, email address: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

4) Alternating on a biweekly basis with Yes We Can is Kass Crossfire. Kass Crossfire allows -nay encourages – live disagreement on radio/internet between panelists, upon the latest political issue in Kenya and sometimes in the world. The panelists take sides arbitrarily and even if they all take the same side, at one time or other, they must still find points of disagreement however minor and make meals of them. Sometimes listeners are asked to take part by voting for the competing sides. The programme features the iron lady, the fiery Lilian Mogendi; Manoah araap Korir, who has dabbled in the rough and tumble of Kenyan electoral politics and quite often breathes fire, and the indomitable Henry Gichaba, an academic and author of a number of books, including the political satire, I apologize, in which he satirizes Kenyan politics and corruption: the combination that has resulted in murders and assassinations. Dr Sambu moderates this no-holds-barred show, and has often been hit himself. The show goes on air Saturday 6.30 to 8 a.m., East African time, of 11.30 p.m. to 1.00 a.m. at Washington, DC.

5) Atinye amunee asi aasobe is a Christian preaching programme featuring Pr Samuel  Ngetich Chemagariin and it comes on air 8 pm East African time/1.00 pm Eastern Standard Time in summer.

6) Kagiptai is a programme associated for the last five years with Dr Kipkoeech araap Sambu, also CEO of Kass FM International, LLC. He aims to simplify and present Egyptological topics, linking Kalenjiin history, language, religion, and other aspects of culture to ancient Egypt - the ancient world's science and technology pace-setter, the sole superpower until the Persian Empire finally overthrew it. By this he stokes the people's pride in their heritage, uplifting their confidence and collective self-esteem. It is only a proud people who can attain and produce their best potential, which is theoretically at par with the best in the world as proven of old and as the athletes from the community are busy proving at the moment. Dr Sambu discusses further Egyptological topics on the website: www.rediscoverafrica.net

7) For at least two hours: 3-5pm Eastern, 10 pm East African time, every Saturday and Sunday, greetings programmes are aired from Washington, DC, the Saturday one in Kalenjiin and the Sunday one in a mixture of languages - which is why it is called Kass Babel. The Saturday presenters of Kass nam anam DC, are: Kipyegon araap Ng'eno, Linah Jerotich, Chepchumba Kelum, and Kaboon Kipsang. Kass Babel revolves around its colourful mainstay, Nahason Orenge, who is supported by Ben Migosi and Judy Onsomu. The programme is, like all the other programmes aired from DC, sponsored by Karibu Online.

8) During all week days, at 5.30 am, East African time, news is read from the DC station. The main news readers are: Kipyegon araap Ngeno, Silas Laboso, Linah Jerotich, and Lily Bomett. The technical man is Amos Togoch. Each newscast has an associate attached to it. The following are the associates: Dr Duncan Chaplin, Mr Abraham Cheluget, Coach Ezekiel Koech, Amb Peter Rono, and Felix Kibet araap Butitt. The associates are well-read, specialized wisemen (and women) who help expound on major news items.
