IFAD President  Nwanze declared winner of Africa Food Prize

NAIROBI, (PSCU) – International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) President Kanayo Nwanze has been declared winner of the Africa Food Prize.


Dr. Nwanze was declared the laureate of the prize at the ongoing African Green Revolution Forum, in Nairobi.

The award was presented to Dr. Nwanze by Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and Paul Kagame of Rwanda and the Prize Committee Chairman Olesegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Nwanze pledged $550 million (Ksh5.5 billion) per year, towards the agricultural financing for the 2016-2018 period.

He said the agricultural sector can only be transformed when people see it as a business venture.

“No nation has transformed itself without giving women equal opportunities as men,” said Dr. Nwanze.

Dr Nwanze commended Kenya for its efforts in transforming the dairy industry which he said has benefited from government support.

Africa Food Prize which is worthy US $ 100,000 recognizes individuals/institution that lead the effort to change the reality of farming in Africa.

The prize was awarded at a gala dinner at the United Nations Headquarters, Gigiri, Nairobi.
