Calls for Uhuru to Resign Intensify
Calls for Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta to relinquish his portfolio, intensified when leaders commemorated the 18th anniversary since the demise of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
Speakers during the ceremony held at the Bondo University College faulted the Gatundu South legislator for retaining the position even after his indictment at the International Criminal Court were confirmed.
Kisumu West M.P. Olago Aluoch sparked the debate insisting that Uhuru was abetting impunity for failing to step down from the two public offices he held.
Others who echoed similar sentiments were MPs John Pesa, Jakoyo Midiwo, Ayiecho Olweny and Dan Mwanzo who demanded that the Deputy Premier quits in accordance with the provision found in the national accord and the new constitution.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga who was the chief guest during the colourful occasion however stayed clear of the debate but urged Kenyans to shun ethnic based politics and reject leaders who propagated tribal rhetoric during their campaigns.
He told Kenyans to remain focused as a united people irrespective of their ethnic affiliations to realize the dreams of our founding fathers of the nation.
“We must sustain our resolve to make this nation a better place where we are free from poverty, disease, ignorance and bad governance” Odinga said.
Notable personalities at the ceremony were the Premier’s wife Ida Odinga, Deputy premier Musalia Mudavadi, cabinet Ministers James Orengo, Paul Otuoma, Alfred Khangati and MPs Shakeel Shabir and Yusuf Shanzu among others.
The ceremony also saw elders from the Njuri Ncheke, Luhya, Teso Maasai, Kalenjin, and Kirinyaga councils attend the meeting where they vowed to mobilize their kinsmen to pursue issues based politics and elect visionary leaders during the coming polls.
The calls for Uhuru to quit comes after the ICC found four out of the six suspects before the pre trial chambers were found palpable of crimes against humanity.
