Electoral Body Unveils Final Register
The Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) has called on president Kibaki to declare 4th August a national Holiday in order to allow Kenyans participate fully in the referendum Vote.The commissions chairman Ahmed Issac Hassan urged Kenyans to turn up in large numbers to Vote in the historic exercise saying they had finalized the list of voters where he announced that the a total of 50,837 Kenyans will be charged with double registration for the referendum on the proposed constitutional.
Hassan said that at the closing of registration the commission had registered 12,656,451 and after the cleaning process the new register has a total of 12,470,433 - Difference being the cases of double registration and scanning errors.
“We are in the process of building a register for persons who attempted to register more than once to ensure that they are not only prevented from Voting but also but also punished from breaking the law”said Hassan.
Hassan noted that the highest number an individual who tried to register more than once was 11 times in Kisumu Town West and 8 times in Mombasa.
Releasing the figures On Wednesday,Hassan said that Embakasi constituency leads in the number of registered voters with 287,429 followed by Juja at 189,998 while Kasarani comes Third at 180,886 voters.
The constituency with the least number of voters is Lamu East with 8,834 voters, Fafi (9,011) and Wajir North (10,002).
A total of 5,605 prisoners will be taking part in the referendum after they were registered following a court order.
The Oldest registered voter enrolled by IIEC in the country is a Ms Alice Muthoni who is 119 years while the oldest Man recorded was Mr Simon Waweru with 118 Yrs.
Mr Hassan was speaking after meeting the European union Observers where he assured Kenyans that they had made security arrangements with the police commissioner to ensure the safety of all voters it the referendum Day.
Concern has been raised in parts of the Rift Valley Province over claims of threats therefore more security officers have been sent to beef up security in areas perceived to be hot spots and prone to violence.
