Government asked to Come Clean over Bashir Saga
Members of Parliament (MPs) want the government to reveal who invited the President Al-Bashir for the promulgation ceremony last week.
Speaking during a media briefing in Naivasha Monday, Dr. Bony Khalwale (Ikolomani) and Fred Outa (Nyando) said it was unfortunate that President Bashir`s visit, was being handled casually by the Government, asking the two principals to take responsibility for the invitation.
The duo said Bashir should not have come in the country, seeing that Kenya was a signatory of the Rome Statute.
“Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for atrocities committed against the Sudanese people and those poor people have a right to Justice and protection,n and it should not be a case of big fish protecting the big fish,” Dr. Khalwale said.
The two said the blame game among the coalition partners was not helping. “The African Unity (AU) has taken a stand that it cannot arrest Bashir, but this did not mean that he comes bragging to the Kenyan soil and this impunity must stop,” they said.
The two MPs doubted Kenya will hand over its post-election violence suspects to the ICC. Bashir is being sought by ICC for the murder of hundreds of people in Darfur; Sudan and the international community criticized the Government for his presence in the country on Friday, saying the government should have arrested him and handed him to ICC for prosecution.
The Government on its part has defended itself saying, President Bashir was invited to the fete just like any other guests.
