Kenyan lawyers have come to the defended the human rights Boss Florence Jaoko on claims of credibility test.

The legal officers have openly differed with commissioners at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights over their decision to throw out embattled chairperson from the commission.

The Law Society of Kenya, the International Commission of Jurists and the Federation of Women Lawyers FIDA in a joint press conference argued that the commissioners have no powers to remove their chairperson from office.

The society said according to provisions of Kenyan law there is a procedure to oust out the sitting chair of any commission in Kenya.

“We have not come across a legal interpretation that would rend itself to what is happening,” said ICJ Executive Director George Kegoro

Mr Kegoro said being State body commissioners have an obligation to explain their action to Kenyans and safeguard the reputation of the Commission.

Earlier on the commissioners had met and proposing the removal of Jaoko on grounds of not being as vibrant as his immediate predecessor Maina Kiai which has lead to lack of credibility by the commission .

However, Ms Jaoko came out aggressively defending his position saying that according to the law the commissioners have no powers to expel her and that only a tribunal or the Parliament can remove her from office.
