Fake Seeds in Market

Farmers in Kuria West and East districts wants the Kenya Seed Company to explain why fake seeds were being packed in its bags.

The call comes in the wake of accusations that the company was colluding with some unscrupulous businessmen to sell fake seeds to farmers.

Farmers in the region claimed that there were racketeers within the company who are out to frustrate and reap profits out of farmers' misfortunes.

"Unless Kenya Seed managers exonerate themselves, we will hold them responsible," said Mr. Maisori Mwita, a prominent farmer from Ntimaru division.

He added that farmers had now opted for commercial maize seeds, which would lead to lower harvests, rather than spend Sh3,300 for a 25kg bag which could turn out to be fake.

The farmers also accused the government of failing in its responsibility to manage the agriculture industry.

Mr. Nyasiri called for the liberalization of the seed business so that the country can be cleaned of fake seeds.

Efforts to get comment from Kenya seed company however failed as all the land lines telephone numbers to the headquarters were not going through.
