Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has urged agricultural research centers in the country to intensify production of drought resistant crops for farmers in dry areas.
Mr. Musyoka noted that most of the arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) have great potential of producing enough food and commercial crops if such areas are irrigated and planted with the suitable crops.
He called upon all stakeholders in the agricultural sector to partner in irrigation agriculture so as to ensure all season food production and guarantee food security for the country.
The Vice President was speaking in Kyuso town in his Mwingi North Constituency during a farmers field day and launch of Gadam sorghum.
During the ceremony, Mr. Musyoka flagged-off six lorries carrying over 40 tones of Gadam sorghum purchased by the East African Breweries from farmers in the area.
Earlier, the Vice President accompanied by Kyuso District Commissioner, Peter Maina layed a foundation stone for the proposed Kyuso district headquarters that would accommodate over six government Ministries under one roof
The Vice President said soon a multibillion water project from Kiambere to Kyuso, Tseikuru and Mumoni district would commence thus solving the perennial water shortage in the area.
He directed the Kyuso district cooperative Officer, to urgently register Kyuso district farmers cooperative society to help farmers market their produce and cushion them against exploitation by middlemen.
Mr. Musyoka advised the youth to shun overconsumption of alcohol and instead engage in constructive activities that would better their lives.
He called on Kenyans to embark on nation building after successful endorsing a new constitution through the recent national referendum.
The Vice President assured that the new constitution would be implemented in the shortest time possible to enable Kenyans benefit more under the new Law.
