The ministry of Housing has pioneered a new system of building houses which cuts costs by 40 per cent.
The system known as, ‘Inter-Locking- Stabilized Soil blocks’, uses loam-sandy soil for making blocks.
The officer in charge of the program, Mr. Justus Osoro, said the new system of building cuts costs by 40 per cent and it takes a short time to complete a house. The Inter-Locking Soil blocks system was borrowed from South Africa where the system has been used for many years. Mr. Osoro said a two bedroom house built by bricks and cement costs over one million but a house built using the inter-locking soil system costs less than sh.500, 000.
He urged Kenyans to adopt the system because it is cheaper and it also cuts the cost of hiring workers because one mason and two workers are sufficient labour for constructing a house.
Mr. Osoro said the ministry of housing has trained over 50 masons in South Rift.
