140 Children to Benefit from Heart Surgery

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in collaboration with a team of doctors from Guy Hospital and the Royal Brompton Hospital from Britain will conduct open heart surgeries to paediatric patients.

The surgery which will take place for about 12 days from Monday 16th May 2011 at the KNH Main Theatres targets children from poor backgrounds and cannot afford to raise funds to undergo the surgery.

The two week mission which is being  facilitated by the Medical and Educational Aid to Kenya (MEAK) team from Britain is set to benefit a total of one hundred (140) pediatric patients with congenital heart conditions who will undergo  open heart surgeries at subsidized costs.

The visiting team will also be donating oxygenators and valves to the hospital which are much needed by the biggest referral hospital in Kenya

The successful partnership between KNH and MEAK which began in 2002 has enhanced surgeons’ skills, improved equipment and technology in addition to making it possible for needy patients to access medical treatment at an affordable cost.

Generally, the cost of open heart surgery ranges from KES. 150,000 to 300,000 but the patients will be charged a subsidized cost of KES. 20,000 during the project.
