Eldoret residents are up in arms over abnormal charges for rubberstamping P3 forms at a local government facility and are calling for intervention from the relevant ministry.
Several assault victims have taken issue with the Uasin Gishu District Hospital claiming the Ksh 2,000 rubberstamp charge levied on them is a corrupt means of fleecing needy victims of cases ranging from domestic violence to personal disputes.
One such victim is Hellen Tarus who suffered multiple injuries after her husband battered her a week ago, she is yet to receive treatment at the hospital due to her inability to raise the fee demanded at the revenue department in the institution.
She told KNA of her doubts of ever obtaining justice because the police could only act on her case if the hospital to conduct an assessment of the extent of her injuries, administer the necessary treatment and sign the P3 form.
The hospital Matron Ms Gaudencia Akoth acknowledged that the institution faced a myriad of challenges including corruption and dilapidated infrastructure that impeded efficient service delivery and asked the government to get actively involved in lifting the image of the facility.
Other patients who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimization by the hospital staff spoke of various suspect charges demanded by the institution before any services are offered. They also blamed the medical personnel at the hospital of laxity.
But the hospitals Medical Superintendent Dr Nabila Amin sought to absorb the medical facility of any wrong doing claiming the hospital only levied standard charges and that no such anomaly as overcharge or corruption had been brought to her attention.
She however admitted to having a host of dishonest health workers who operate in the facility and may not waste any opportunity of making an extra coin by extorting innocent patient who offered money to any medical personnel.
The Medical Superintendent thus warned any patient seeking services to make all their payments at the revenue office and make sure they obtain an official receipt as proof of payment.
