The United Republican Party (URP) is set to appeal if the International Criminal Court (ICC) confirms charges against Eldoret North MP William Rutto who is one of the party’s top leaders.
URP Presidential hopeful, who is also Member of Parliament (MP) for Lugari, Cyrus Jirongo said confirmation of charges against the six suspects was not the end of the world and urged Kenyans to pray hard ahead of the ICC ruling tomorrow.
Jirongo added that URP leaders will give a second attempt to establish a local tribunal to try the suspects in Kenya.
The MP said the party will mount pressure to ensure that the tribunal is established soon to try all suspects of the 2008 post- election violence in Kenya.
Speaking during a meeting with URP delegates from Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia Counties in Kakamega town yesterday, Jirongo said if the charges against the suspects are not confirmed, URP will mount pressure to bring Wako back on the ground to gather evidence to ensure that those who bore the greatest responsibility in the violence are brought to book.
“It is unfair to try innocent Kenyans. We know those who bear the greatest responsibility and we want to see them tried,” said the MP.
The legislator said the party will from next week embark on a massive recruitment drive to strengthen it ahead of the general elections.
He urged the delegates to be aggressive to give him a voice at national level once the elections to pick the party’s presidential candidate are called have been done.
Jirongo is eyeing URP’s presidential ticket alongside Eldoret North MP William Ruto and Trade Minister Chirau Mwakwere.| < Prev | Next > |
