The Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has called for aspirants of elective seats through the party to familiarize themselves with the new constitution, political parties act and electoral regulations.
Speaking at the party’s office in Nairobi, Party leader Joseph Munyao said that the new constitution, political parties act and other electoral laws have fundamentally changed the electoral system in Kenya.
“It is not business as usual. The new laws have put many restrictions in a bid to instill discipline in election exercises in this country and every aspiring leader ought to read new laws meticulously,” said Munyao.
“From this year, elections will be conducted with a lot of discipline.
Shifting of political parties anyhow is barred. Political nomads will be a thing of past,” he added.
Munyao said that the party is changing its constitution to align with the national constitution which has established new governance structures.
He said that the party will lodge recruitment and grassroots elections to set up administrative structure that will oversee activities of the party.
Speaking at the same venue, the party’s Secretary General Dr. Chris Murungaru said that the party warmly welcomes the laws that will have many “casualties” of the political and electoral reforms.
“We as DP are not ashamed of saying that we have endured the journey and struggle for reforms in governance and will be in forefront in to ensure the outcome is tremendous for the country, noted Murungaru.
“The new laws will make sure that those elected have the capacity to deliver what the Kenyans elect them for,” he added.
He further explained that the party will battle to ensure that the constitution is not only implemented but implemented to the letter and spirit.
All political parties are required to have complied with the new laws by April 30 or be deregistered by the registrar of political parties.
The meeting was attended by former Limuru MP George Nyanja, Activist Orie Rongo Manduli, Party’s youth coordinator Mercy Gakuya among others.
