With only four days to the July 12 Matuga by-election battle, the campaigns have intensified with Vice president joining the circle to drum up support for the PNU candidate and immediate former the MP Chirau Ali Mwakwere
The PNU coalition candidate and former transports Minister, Chirau Mwakwere, on Wednesday received a boost in his bid to recapture the Matuga Parliamentary seat when members and affiliates of the party joined his campaign trail.
The leaders who accompanied the Vice President included MPs Johnstone Muthama
(Kangundo) and Prof. Philip Kaloki (Kibwezi) and several politicians crisscrossed the constituency urging voters to turn out in large numbers on July 12 and vote for Makwere.
The campaign team praised Makwere for his development record and appealed to Matuga constituents to give the former MP a chance to complete his development agenda that he had set for the area.
The Vice President described Makwere as dedicated leader who is a team player as witnessed during his past tenure in Parliament.
Mr. Musyoka expressed confidence that President Kibaki will reappoint Makwere to his cabinet position once the people of Matuga endorse him come the forth by-election.
“ I am sure that President Kibaki will return Mwakwere back to the cabinet if you re-elect him at the July 12 by- elections,’’ said Mr. Musyoka.
Among the areas the campaign team stopped to drum up support for Makwere during the day-long campaigns includes Kombani, Kwale Baraza Park, Mtsangatamu, Burani, Kizibe, Mafumoni, and Mkongani and Lukore in Shimba Hills.
Speaker after speaker praised Mwakwere as visionary leader whose development record spoke for itself and has comprehensive strategies to improve road network, rural electrification and economic empowerment for the youth.
The Vice President expressed that the independent electoral commission will ensure that justice and fairness is adhered to maintain confidence among the people.
They dismissed false propaganda and smear campaigns against Makwere and urged the constituents to ignore such falsehoods and re-elect the former MP.
The Vice President singled out rural electrification and alleviation of poverty in the area as some of those areas that Mwakwere has struggled to achieve during his term in Parliament.
Mr. Kalonzo said Makwere is a leader who has done a lot for the people of Matuga and called on the residents to reject a group of people who were crisscrossing the area undermining his development record.
He urged the people of Matuga to undertake peaceful campaigns and back violence free elections.
Mr. Wetangula said that Mwakwere has a lot of leadership experience and he commands respect amongst his parliamentary colleagues.
Amid cheers and shouts of dzipapa dzipapa and kazi iendelee slogan, Makwere on his part made a passionate appeal to his Matuga residents to re-elect him back to parliament so that he may continue to serve them as well as accomplish his development vision for the constituency.
Makwere is battling out with ODM’ Hassan Mohamed Mwanyoya, UDM’s Kassim Tandaza and Isaac Mutula of Labour Party.
