Kenya reclaimed continental glory at the just concluded 17th Africa Athletics Championships after clinching 10 gold and a total of 25 medals.
The Championship which ended on Sunday at a climax celebration at the Nyayo National Stadium saw Kenya’s national anthem played over five times in a day.
The Nyayo stadium was packed to capacity and the crowd that followed proceedings from outside the stadium was disappointed for finding no space to cheer the Kenyan team.
In the road to recapturing the glory Kenyan athletes shocked many when they swept clean the men’s 5000m, taking all the three medals led by Edwin Soy disappointing the optimistic Ethiopiana.
Soy clocked 13:30.46 beating Vincent Yator at the finish line to enhance Kenya’s gold rush. Mark Kiptoo settled for bronze.
Another shocker that Kenyans pulled on the continent was a gold win in the 4x400 men’s relay team after winning with a time of 3:02.96.
Asbel Kiprop put the disappointment of last year’s IAAF World Athletics Championships behind him with a brilliant display to win the 1500m.
“It was a good race. The home support helped us a lot. As a team we discussed that I push for the first two laps. In the last lap the pace was a lot especially from the Moroccan and the Ethiopian. Laalou (Amine) is an 800m runner and Gebremedhin (Wolde) I know what he can do because I’ve raced him before."
Former World champion Janeth Jepkosgei settled for a silver after losing the race that Kenyans wanted something less than a gold women’s 800m race to Zahra Bouras of Algeria.
Milcah Chemos produced a dramatic burst of speed to win her maiden continental title in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
Kenya’s Grace wanjiru clinched the 20km women’s title this morning at the Africa Athletics Championships with a time of 1:34.19 ahead of Trabelsi Chaima.
