Nigerian president has appointed a new police chief, as violence from the Islamist group Boko Haram intensified.
President Goodluck Jonathan who has been facing criticism over the chaos on Wednesday sacked police chief Hafiz Ringim and appointed Mohammed D. Abubakar to head the force in a move he describes as the first step in reorganizing the force to make it capable to tackle emerging internal security challenges.
Ringim was removed along with six of his assistants as the country reeled from a wave of bomb and gun attacks by Islamist group Boko Haram in the country’s second city of Kano that killed at least 185 people.
The attacks were the deadliest single operation by the group and targeted mainly police stations.
