Mitumba traders want ban on imports lifted

Mitumba dealers have asked the government to lift a ban on the import of second-hand clothes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mitumba Association of Kenya is now seeking an audience with Trade Cabinet Secretary Betty Maina to discuss the way forward as traders struggle to get through the tough economic times occasioned by the pandemic.

However, the government has maintained that such a step would need a careful examination of the current COVID-19 situation in line with the guidelines and protocols issued by the government.

The importation of second-hand clothes remains suspended for the better part of two months with the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) citing the directive as a temporary measure to curb the spread of Covid-19.
