DCI Kinoti says his office did not order Senators arrest

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti has said his office did not give orders for the arrest of three Senators ahead of the vote on the contentious County Division of Revenue bill.

The IG who spoke before the joint committee of the Senate on Security and Justice and Legal Affairs added that their officers are not responsible for the life threats against Senators Cleophas Malala of Kakamega, who claimed he was being trailed by police.

“I am a husband and a young father. The most painful thing is that I am being accused of stage-managing my arrest on August 17…….i have said time and again my life is in danger. I have written enough letters and called offices in this Republic but they have not taken any action even to give me extra security,” an emotional Malala told the Senate committee on Monday.

Bomet Senator Christopher Lagat also claimed some detectives have posed a threat to their lives but Mr. Kinoti dismissed the claims as fictitious.

The Senators were recently arrested, detained overnight, and released in an alleged attempt to influence the vote on the controversial third-generation revenue sharing formula. Malala broke down in tears as he told of his frustration to have additional security.
