BBI referendum likely to be held in July or August

The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) bill has passed through Senate without any amendments after 51 voted “YES” while 12 voted “NO”.

Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura who had been kicked out of the house on disciplinary grounds did not participate in the exercise which comes less than a week after the National Assembly voted in favor of the Bill.

It is now expected that a referendum will be held in either July or August after the Senate speaker transmits the verdict to the president who will then forward it to the IEBC.

However, the decision on whether Kenya will hold a referendum as per the propositions by the BBI proponents now lies in the hands of five judges: Justice Chacha Mwita, Joel Ngugi, George Odunga, Jarius Ngaah, and Janet Mulwa.

Several petitioners had questioned the BBI process to amend the Constitution terming it a dangerous and expensive move.
